Margaret Anderson Kelliher has made history. The former Minnesota House speaker and gubernatorial candidate is the first woman to lead a major trading organization, after being named the new president and CEO of the Minneapolis Grain Exchange (MGEX). Kelliher, a well-known figure in Minnesota politics, served as a state representative from 2002 to 2010, and was the first woman to become speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives. In 2010, she became the first woman to win the DFL nomination for governor. Kelliher is also a former chairwoman of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party. Kelliher’s new role at the MGEX is a major milestone for women in the finance industry, and for the Minneapolis Grain Exchange, which is the largest independent grain exchange in the world. Kelliher is taking over for outgoing president and CEO Mark Bagan, who held the position for the last 15 years. “I am proud to join the MGEX team and to lead a world-class organization that plays an important role in the global marketplace,” said Kelliher. “I look forward to working with the MGEX Board of Directors, staff and members to ensure the Exchange remains a leader in agricultural risk management and an essential part of the global economy.” In her new role, Kelliher will be responsible for the overall management and strategic direction of the MGEX. She will also be tasked with expanding the Exchange’s reach, while continuing to focus on providing the best risk management products to customers. Kelliher’s experience in the public and private sectors makes her the perfect fit for the position. She has a long history of working with agricultural organizations, and was recently appointed to the National Grain and Feed Association’s Board of Directors. Kelliher’s appointment to the MGEX is a sign of progress for women in the finance industry. Her appointment is a reminder that women are capable of taking on leadership roles in the financial sector and that they should be given the opportunity to do so.
